Geocaching HQ Admin: From June 06, 2018 until March 06, 2019, Geocaching HQ conducted an Augmented Reality (AR) experiment. During that time, cache owners were allowed to submit Mystery Caches that required the finder to download and use an AR app to find the cache. The goal of the experiment was to see how the geocaching community would use AR technology. Cache owners placed more than 600 AR caches around the world!

Unfortunately, the AR apps which met HQ’s requirements for the experiment have been or are currently in the process of being discontinued. As a result, it is currently not possible for finders to have the AR experience that was originally intended. Therefore, HQ has decided to archive all active AR caches placed during the experiment period. We are respectfully requesting that all AR cache owners please remove the cache container and contents as soon as possible.

As technology evolves, we look forward to seeing how Augmented Reality might have future applications for geocaching. Thank you to all cache owners who participated in the experiment!

NOTE: (8/13/19) Due to the changes at the posted coords, we are moving the posted coords and the start of the Metaverse experience to N 46 25.225 W 117 01.897, about 84 feet SW of the old coords and closer to the key of the mystery puzzle. Also, because of the changes at the posted coords, when Dolly helps you find the key info needed to get the final coords, you will need to add 1 to the number that you find, before you enter it into the Metaverse app. (For example: If the number that Dolly points you to is 12345, then you would add 1 and enter 12346.)

Geocaching is trying out a new type of mystery cache called Augmented Reality (AR) (at least until Sept. 6, 2018). We experienced a version of AR during the Lab Cache part of GeoWoodstock XVI and wanted to give local cachers an opportunity to see a new high tech Wherigo-like cache. BTW, for this new/temporary cache type, Geocaching HQ allows COs to require the use of the Metaverse (AR) app to find this cache. (9/6/18 - NOTE: It looks like the AR experiment will be extended until March 6, 2019.)

To get this cache you will need to:

1) Download the Metaverse app to your cell phone (here are links to the iOS and Android versions). Make sure that you configure your phone to allow the Metaverse app to have access to your camera and to your location.

2) Using the Metaverse app that you have downloaded to your cell phone,
  a) find the screen with an "M" near the top, next to the text that says "Search Metaverse",
  b) type in "GeoEwe", then click on the "GeoEwe Group" choice that appears below the search line,
  c) click on the Metaverse experience called "GeoEwe" to start your hunt for the cache.

If everything works, then you should get a message that you are too far away from the posted coordinates for the experience to start. Click on the compass icon in the bottom right of the last screen (c) and watch your progress on the map or go to the posted coords and try step 2 again, which, this time, might take you directly to the experience rather than to the map.

At the posted coordinates you will have a great view of a nearby structure. Here you will be asked a question about your location, via the app experience, "GeoEwe". A correct answer will give you the final coordinates and a cache location hint. (Some folks have had the app crash after entering a guess. We aren’t sure why this happens, but we have set the app to allow multiple tries, so give it another go.)
