A Lesson in Electrochemistry Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Butterboy6658: It was fun while it lasted!

I can’t keep up with the amount this cache is getting muggled — the unique container is expensive and time consuming to build. I will eventually rebuild a similar cache in a better location.

Geocache Description:

A brief lesson in electrochemistry: A redox reaction occurs when electrons are transferred from one chemical species to another. Electrons travel from a chemical species called the anode to another species called the cathode. Most commonly, these reactions occur between two metals. The species which loses electrons is oxidized, and the species which gains electrons is reduced (hence RedOx reaction)! Depending on the electron configuration of the species, some species will be more reactive than others. Did you know rusting is a redox reaction? Iron can act as an anode and be oxidized to produce iron oxide - aka rust. This can be very detrimental to city infrastructure such as water pipes and bridges. Fortunately, there are methods to prevent the oxidation of iron! One common method is to coat iron in metals which are less reactive; this is called galvanization. An older method is to employ something called cathodic protection. Cathodic protection uses a species called a sacrificial anode, which is way more reactive than iron. The "Sacrificial Anode" connects to the ground near the iron and sacrifices itself to the elements to be oxidized so that iron doesn't have to! This essentially forces iron to become the cathode instead of the anode, which eliminates the possibility of the iron oxidizing. I have included an image of a cathodic protection assembly attached to a fire hydrant in Hawkwood, Calgary. Use this image with the hint. If you don't use it, make sure to check it out after finding the cache! Please do not move the cache from its location. Please be considerate when closing up the cache for other geocachers! Park in Tuscany, and walk to the cache. Please do not park in the private parking lot for Lynx Ridge Golfers. You may park at the end of 12 Mile Coulee Road, however it is unclear if this is private property. Please do not climb the tower. Congrats seekers in sneakers on the FTF!
