The historic church of St Mary (Panagia) is south east of the village Xylofagou
Panagia in medieval and modern Greek, also transliterated Panayia or Panaghia, is one of the titles of Mary, the mother of Jesus, used especially in Orthodox Christianity
According to tradition this area was an old monastery built in the 13th century but destroyed in 1426. After 200 years the monastery was re- built by two brothers Hatji and Vlachos - later in 1980 renovated by Evangelos Vrahimi and wife Chiona
Beyond the church (about 300 metres) is a “Cave Memorial” containing many ecclesiastical icons. If anyone can throw some light on the origin of the cave I would appreciate further details very much
Park the car at the church, proceed along the footpath behind the church until you come to the cave memorial - well worth viewing. After which, continue in the same direction for another 30 metres, turn right at the open field, then proceed to coordinates
There are a number of steps to this cache so wheelchair access is not possible. This cache is a small plastic container, ideal for placing small trackables and swaps
This Church site has a large picnic area so take along your flask of coffee and snacks and enjoy the scenery
