Royal Palm Pines Natural Area (RPPNA) is a 773-acre natural area managed by Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management (ERM). Located in Royal Palm Beach, it was the first natural area purchased using voter-approved funds to save environmentally sensitive lands. 651 acres were acquired by the county in 1992-1993, with an additional 111 acres added in 2000 via mitigation settlement. 11 acres around the main (east) entrance is leased from the Saratoga Pines HOA. This property includes mesic flatwoods, wet flatwoods, hydric hammock, wet prairie, depression marsh, and dome swamp. Wetland ecosystems cover about 40% of the property with flatwoods comprising most of the remainder. Many of the trails are prone to seasonal flooding. The mesic flatwoods are a fire-dependant community and ERM manages them with prescribed burns. There are four entrances to the property. The main entrance is the east entrance on Nature's Way and features a short ADA-accessible trail ending in a marsh overlook. Other entrances are Crestview Park at the end of Pine St (Southeast), 40th St (North), and N Rd (South). Note the South entrace has no parking space. Neither the Natural Area nor Crestview Park have any restroom facilities. Trail guide available. This cache should be a easy p&g and hopefully the start to a nice day of hiking and geocaching.
