HMP History Series: Go Fish! Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Laurel Tree: RIP little cache. This one survived several floods but was no match for the City of Easton's bulldozer. The entire area has been cleared and there's no place to hide a replacement. Thanks to everyone who gave this a favorite. It was fun while it lasted.

Geocache Description:

Welcome to Hugh Moore Park!  In addition to being a lovely place to visit, the park has a fascinating history that this series of caches will explore.

Until the building of the dams for the Lehigh Navigation in the early 19th century, shad migrated up the Lehigh from the Delaware River.  They were a significant food source for both the native Lenni Lenape peoples and later the Moravians in Bethlehem.  Fortunately for the environment and fisherman, fish passageways have been installed in the Chain Dam and the dam in Easton to help re-establish shad in the Lehigh River.  For several years now, the Delaware River Shad Fishermen’s Association has operated a shad spawning tank in Hugh Moore Park in order to help with repopulating the fish in the Lehigh and Delaware Rivers.
