"The River" was recorded by Bruce Springsteen and released on his double album of the same name in 1980. The album was noted for its mix of party style rock songs and dark, solemn examinations of the hardness experienced by many people in America in the late 1970s. It was his first album to hit number one on the charts and has been ranked by the magazine, Rolling Stone as one of the Top 500 Albums of All Time. The song itself was inspired by Springsteen's brother-in-law and sister.
