"The River" was recorded by Bruce Springsteen and released on his double album of the same name in 1980. The album was noted for its mix of party style rock songs and dark, solemn examinations of the hardness experienced by many people in America in the late 1970s. It was his first album to hit number one on the charts and has been ranked by the magazine, Rolling Stone as one of the Top 500 Albums of All Time. The song itself was inspired by Springsteen's brother-in-law and sister. The song opens with a haunting harmonica solo and tells the story of a young couple who face tough decisions early in life and have to re-adjust their dreams of the future to face what life is throwing at them. The river is a symbol for their dreams of the future.
