Geocache Description:

Avaiki Cave was the landing place of the first canoe bringing Polynesian settlers to the island. They named the spot Avaiki in memory of the ancestoral home, Havaiki. Because of its importance, only those of high rank were allowed to swim in the cave pool.

The cache is placed near the beginning of a short walk to a spectacular dripstone cave and down through some well constructed steps and ramps to the reef flat. Across the reef flat a few metres to the right is a crystal clear pool in a cathedral-like cave, filled with juvenile fish and fragile coral. This amazing pool is accessible only at low tide, and is perfect for a sunset swim.

We placed this cache as a memento of a week long caching trip to Niue in the company of 12 other cachers ( Team Welsh, Sallies, Drawp, Georick, Tufty, Urbangypsynz, Supernanny and Butchie bum). The couples stayed in the motel above the cave.

Our thanks to alsjfs who will do any necessary cache maintenance on their regular trips to the island.
