Geocache Description:

A cache beside the river Don and overlooked by the balustrade (dating from around 1700), which was part of the gardens of Sprotbrough Hall.

This was formerly home to Sir Godfrey Copley, who was the
founder of the forerunner to the Nobel prize.

Various types of water transport pass through this stretch of the river, ranging from larger cargo vessels such as the Exol Pride, through pleasure craft and canal boats, to human powered boats. Although not quite the Thames near Eton College, a walk along the Trans Pennine Trail beside the Don on a Sunday morning, is often accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of the boats from the rowing club, situated downstream, at Hexthorpe Flats.

Sculling on the Don

The river is calm, as it meanders Eastwards from Sprotbrough lock, giving plenty of scope for an extended run upstream and a return leg, often accompanied by encouragement from a small motorised dinghy.

The cache was placed shortly after a prolonged heatwave, hopefully, there will be more 'Jolly Boating Weather' to come.

UPDATE 7th September 2018:
The repair work on the footpath beneath the road bridge at Sprotbrough Lock is now complete and there is once again access from the parking place near to the landing at Sprotbrough Falls and the nearby riverside pub.

The cache can also be reached from the East (A1(M) bridge) end of the path (see waypoint).
