Geocache Description:

Just a little cache in a quiet little park. Somewhere to take a break from the big busy Bruce.

Welcome to Marmor, established in 1905, it was once a thriving limestone mining town of over 300 families, dwelling for the most part in semi-permanent calico houses. The town is now considerably less densely populated and the mine  no longer operates, but is still in evidence on the hill across the railway corridor. The lime processing works ran until 2017, it was once owned by Mount Morgan's famous gold mine.  The railway line was in situ long before the first Calico house of Marmor was erected, and is one of the busiest lines in Queensland today. During your visit you will probably see some of Queensland's locomotive monsters. These trains can stretch to 1.7 kilometers and carry huge quantities of coal (up to 10812 tonnes I've been told) from the Bowen Basin to the port of Gladstone for export. They are a sight to behold.

Our park is home to the annual Marmor ANZAC  Day Commemoration and consequently this cache will be unavailable between April 20th and 30th each year. At all other times this park is a great place to enjoy a picnic and stretch your legs a bit to break a journey along the Bruce Highway. Refreshments, fuel and amenities can be found at the service station located on the south bound side of the highway a few hundred meters from the park.

>Our park is maintained primarily by community volunteers so any CITO help will be greatly appreciated.

One more thing to note, many of our trees are a bit ragged - this is due to the category 5 Cyclone (Marcia) that devastated our community on February 20th 2015. With love and kindness they will regain their former glory.

The rising sun is the emblem worn by Australian military personnel, and this is the "Mark II" cache in this park, - in case you thought the cache name was a bit tangential.

Congratulations to PMT123 on being FTF here :-)
