Geocache Description:

Nice walk from the car park (shown waypoint) under trees and in the shade. It is a 35mm Film canister which is magnetic. The walk from the listed car park to the cache is a nice curved one around the edge of Bushy Park, and is therefore good for dogs. Inside the park is gravel paths so if you have a wheelchair or would struggle on this terrain I advise you to enter from the road side instead of the park. Geocaches aren't allowed in royal parks and therefore you dont need the park to be open for you to find this cache.

If you are in Bushy Park be careful of the numerous deer roaming freely, I would advise you to keep away from them.

History

Bushy park is the second largest Royal park (after Richmond Park) and covers 1,099 Acres. When Henry VIII took over Hampton Court Palace from Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in 1529, the King named three parks that make up modern-day Bushy Park and a small area beside: Hare Warren, Middle Park and Bushy Park. As he was a keen hunter, he established them as deer-hunting grounds. His successors who were less interesting in hunting, added more picturesque features such as the 19km Longford River (built to provide water to Hampton Court Palace by Charles I ). Other Features include Chestnut Avenue and the Diana Fountain, which acted as a grand run up to Hampton court Palace.

During WWII, General Dwight D. Eisenhower  planned the D-Day landings from Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) at Camp Griffiss in the Park.A memorial dedicated to the Allied troops who fell on D-Day now marks the spot where General Eisenhower's tent stood. The nearby Eisenhower House is named in the General's honour.

Nowadays the park holds many cricket clubs, ponds for model boating, horse rides and many wildlife conservation areas.
