Geocache Description:

Cache Is Not At The Posted Coordinates

Mr. Toot is the mascot not only of the North Iowa Band Festival, but also for Mason City as a whole.  His image has appeared on everything from T-Shirts to business cards to city light poles. Now his image also appears on the geocaching map just south of Mason City Iowa.  Each of these puzzles will include a fact or story in theme with the art series.  Some may also include a question or two for you to answer correctly to find the coordinates.

Band Fest

At the same time as the 1962 Premier of the "The Music Man" and the Band Festival parade Hazel Flynn of the Hollywood California Citizen-News was in Mason City to report on the spectacle.  She wrote "Over a thousand trombones, instead of just 76, split the air over Mason City today as this town threw a lollapalooza of a dual celebration...the first national competitive marching band festival and the world premiere of Warner Brother's film of Meredith Willson's Broadway hit, "The Music Man." ... I doubt if Mason City or Willson will ever forget this day.  Nor will this writer, if only because she got to see the corn growing again, sat under huge, dark green shade trees and on velvety lawns, and smelled the wonderful scent of the meadows and clover...and when this disciplined and talented young America proudly paraded with heads high, playing beautiful music, much of it patriotic, something said to us, "Don't worry, all is well with our youth."

Each year in my memory there has been a band queen, in later years they had both a band queen and a band king.
