Geocache Description:

The posted coordinates take you to Calf Mountain .  To claim a find for this EarthCache, please provide answers to the following questions. Do not include your answers in your online log but do send them to the cache owner through their public profile. ALL answers can be derived from cache listing and at ground zero.

Calf Mountain is located along the top of the Darlingford moraine. The moraine is a ground moraine, which is material composed of poorly sorted subglacial rock, deposited beneath a glacier from its edge or end. The Darlingford moraine runs from the Canada/USA border up to St. Claude. The moraine is located at the western limit of the Red River glacial ice lobe, which was one of the last ice lobes to leave Manitoba. The lobe was very thin and confined to high areas, such as the Manitoba escarpment.

Calf Mountain is the site of an ancient indigenous burial ground. Located 2 miles south of the village of Darlingford, the burial site is an artificial earth mound, built by a group known as the Mound Builders, who had constructed several mound settlements in southern Manitoba, but now Calf Mountain is the only one still around. The site was believed to be used between 800 – 1400 AD and it was the believed the Mound Builders origins were Dakota. Previous excavations of the mound in the early 1900’s have found many artifacts including a face mask made of shell, copper remnants believed to be originally from Michigan, shell beads from the Gulf of Mexico and Vancouver Island and bison skulls.

Currently the site is undergoing degradation, as the slopes from the mound slowly erode from the weather and more of the acreage the site lies on is being eroded away by holistic farming, and road encroachment. Also anthropogenic erosion occurs on the mound from the use of ATV traffic.

There is little to no signage at this site so carefully observe your coordinates
