Geocache Description:

Raumai was once a lively village, with a hotel, general store, blacksmith, creamery, library, and post office and a hall, built in 1908, which was the centre of the community’s social life. At each end of the village was a busy sawmill, mainly processing totara. A small school was attached to one of the sawmills and operated until 1908, when a school was built on the western side of Raumai School Road (at that time, the main road - this section of Pohangina Road was cut through the hill later) (Palmerston North: A Centennial History, by G.C. Petersen). In 1972, the school was closed, and the 17 pupils pictured in this photo went instead to Ashhurst school.

Logged finds not matching log-sheet will be removed.
