Geocache Description:

Cache Is Not At The Posted Coordinates

Mr. Toot is the mascot not only of the North Iowa Band Festival, but also for Mason City as a whole.  His image has appeared on everything from T-Shirts to business cards to city light poles. Now his image also appears on the geocaching map just south of Mason City Iowa.  Each of these puzzles will include a fact or story in theme with the art series.  Some may also include a question or two for you to answer correctly to find the coordinates.

The footbridge over Mason City's Willow Creek has been part of Mason City history for more than 100 years.  Built in 1909 by Joshua G. Melson, a contractor and developer, as part of the Rock Crest-River Heights Drive addition, it was given to the city in November 1916.

Located at Second Street Southeast and Connecticut Avenue, the original walkway was built of wooden planks with a hand rail bolted to the walk and covered by wire mesh.  Early Mason Cityans say there was also a rope across the top.  Wooden steps led down to the bridge from the sidewalks at either end.  "It was instrumental in tying the River Heights neighborhood, originally considered a suburb, to the downtown," said Terry Harrison, archivist with the Mason City Public Library.
