Geocache Description:

The Battle of Ridgeway is significant in our history as it was the first fought by entirely Canadian soldiers led by Canadian officers.  It didn't go well - the Canadians were poorly equipped and led while the Americans were all Civil War vets with experienced officers.  I have laid the cache here because this is close (4' north) to the spot where the first Canadian fell, shot dead.  This was Ensign Malcom McEachren of The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada.  Since that day, Canadians have fought and died in countless wars, battles, and skimishes, some famous, some lost, some ignored.  It is central to our beliefs that freedom and justice are worth fighting and dying for, and we have extended that belief to the idea that people around the world are worthy of freedom and justice as well, especilly those who can't fight for themselves.  From fighting against international aggressors, to fighting to maintain the peace, the Canadians lead.

The cache is a very simple park and grab.  There wasn't a whole of spots to choose from around here.  I think even finding a viable place was pure luck.  The battlefield is quite near, along with a charming burial ground, so have a look around.
