Geocache Description:

Welcome to Savernake Mythical Creatures Series!

This series of 12 geocaches is an adventure along small trails in the southern part of the forest with the theme of mythical creatures.

# 1 The Wood Fairies live in the hollows of trees building passages and rooms. Their colourful wings make them easy to find in the open, but with amazing hideouts they are difficult to discover.

The old Forest of Savernake is derived from ancient wood pasture management, and has many veteran trees.  The forest extends to 1100 hectares (2750 acres) most of which is classified as a Special Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI) as well as being registered as an important historic park

Parking is free and the series starts from Three Oak Hill Drive, however please note the gate closing times as it is not open 24 hours.

Please also be aware of the following:

  • The trails can be easiest to negotiate in Spring before the ferns, brambles and nettles grow. Long trousers may be advised.
  • The trails can be muddy after rain or during the winter, so wellies or walking boots are advised.
  • Look out for wild raspberries in July!

Many thanks to the Forestry Commission , who very kindly agreed to the placement of this series - please take a moment to read the below advice from the Forestry Commission:

  • This is a working wood/forest, and you may come across work sites, workers and vehicles during your visit. Please avoid all working areas and obey any safety signs and instructions. You must not enter any areas where access has been restricted.
  • This forest and the roads and tracks are used for a lot of different activities. Please respect their rights to enjoy their recreation.
  • Conditions can change very rapidly in forests and woodlands. Please make sure that you are properly prepared for your visit, and please take care for your own safety.
  • In the interests of safety the Forestry Commission strongly recommends that you carry a mobile phone and first aid kit and leave details of the mobile number, route and expected return time with a friend, relative or responsible person.
