This hill behind Loanhead Primary School is a "bing". These are man-made features built from the spoil from mining processes. In this case, the mine was the Ramsey Colliery, which was located just to the south. It closed in 1965.
Part of the south-east of the bing has been fenced off as the ground is unstable due to smouldering material underground.
If you look to the east on a clear day, you can see the products of a different kind of underground fire. North Berwick Law (triangular shape) and Traprain Law (wide dome shape) in East Lothian. These are eroded remains of volcanoes that were active during the Carboniferous period over 300 million years ago.
