Geocache Description:

Arthur Eric Rownton Gill is best known as a sculptor and engraver working with both stone and wood, influenced very much by his religious beliefs. His works can be seen in many places from country wide World War I  Memorials to the Stations of the Cross in Westminster Cathedral and  other works now in the Tate gallery. His connection with the Llanthony Valley is that in 1924 having given up an apprenticeship  in architecture, he set up his home and workshops at The Monastery at Capel y ffin  where his descendants continued to live until around 1985. Later he owned his own press and was a well known alphabet designer some of these (for eg. Perpetua and Sans serif) still being used world-wide and Gill Sans being adopted in 1990 by the BBC for many of their TV.Graphics. Some of Gill’s lettering can still be seen on the exposed roof rafters of the Monastery’s chapel.
