The Army of Northern Virginia came through Farmville headed towards Appomattox, with the Union Army on their heels. April 7, 1865 the Confederate soldiers found much needed rations including bread, soup and ham. From here General Grant wrote a letter to General Lee suggesting surrender. Lee received the letter at Cumberland Church, showed it to General Longstreet, who handed it back to General Lee and said, “Not yet.”
This area is also adjacent to Tobacco Warehouses, which have since been converted to showrooms for antique furniture store. There is also a park on the other side of the parking lot that hosts several events throughout the year, including concerts on the first Friday of the month throughout the summer.
