At least one late 18th-century map labels Musquapsink Brook "Little Pascack River. It eventually leads to Schlegel lake , a pleaseant , calm lake in the heart of Washington Township.
Musquapsink Brook was names by the Lennui Lenape indians , who inhabited the area prior to 1850. Musquapsink means "water mingled with blood" which based on a legend similar to Romeo and Juliet, involved forbidden lovers from rival tribes.
