The community of Gumlog occupies the northern portion of Franklin County and lies along the Gumlog Cove portion of Lake Hartwell. It is fed by Gumlog Creek, whose source lies several miles to the west, south of the nearby town of Martin. Some say that Gumlog is a translation of the Cherokee word "tsilalu’hi", meaning "sweet-gum place." Others say the name comes from the gum log benches early settlers used when they held their first court.
