Sir Gawain –
This formidable but brash warrior is one of Arthur’s best, a potential heir to the throne. He appears in every version of the legend and is a very well-developed man. Some versions have him as a creature of light – his strength grows through out the day as the sun waxes and then wanes towards sunset. He is the ‘Maiden’s Knight’, defending all, bound to none. He was educated in Rome, is a healer; humane, friend to young knight, and a defender of the poor. There are more stories of him, than of Lancelot, most notably, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. In some versions, he is a Scot, so a personal favorite of mine.
