Uh-oh! National Limerick Day is celebrated annually on May 12th, so I just found out tonight (7-18-18), but, whatever! We're strong, we're flexible, we're creative, we're - Geocachers! So this year we'll be just three months late!
Where: Schroeder Park in Eagle River.
When: 8-12-18, 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Why: Geocaching fun. Prizes for the most creative original limericks with a geocaching theme. Besides, I've never heard of an event such as this! Have you?
Reminder: Geocaching is a family activity so we need to keep our limericks family-friendly - even if we begin one with a classic line such as, "There once was a girl from Nantucket..."
Background: May 12th was chosen in honor of poet Edward Lear's (1812-1888) birthday. Lear published A Book of Nonsense in 1846. He was also a skilled artist. Limericks have just five lines, with a particular rhyming and rhythm pattern:
There once was a brave geocacher, (a)
Who took his wife swimming and splashed her! (a)
Then he needed a hat (b)
And he decided that (b)
He would go to a new haberdasher! (a)
There is plenty of gravel parking available at Schroeder Park. If the pavillion is empty, we'll use it. It's first come first served unless reservations have been made. The municipal price for renting a specific park area has increased so greatly that it exceeds my retirement budget! I'll pack a small table or two in case - BYOC - Bring Your Own Lawn Chair just in case! Anyone wanting to bring snacks to share is invited to do so, but we won't need a lot. Let's have good geocaching fun socializing and seeing what kinds of geocaching limericks are created! If you want to bring a printed copy, I'll post them post-event! ;-)
FTF: Can you believe it? one of the noblecubz drew her own name! (AK puffin lady was the very first cacher to appear). Second Place: tied for this honored position, Lionhouse75 and KR-AK (whose limerick can be seen in the gallery). I've explained geocaching to friends Who think it's too crazy to spend So much time on a find: Are you out of your mind? Yes, and I'll do it again! (by Lionhouse75) One day there was held a great game, The greatest geo-poets invited by name! But the wind was too great, And it Would not abate, Shane and Rachell stayed home and were lame. (by Eagle 2000) And now, the First Place collection, by freeweez: There was a young cacher named Leroy, Who got an FTF and said "Oh boy! Then he got married But was never harried Now he caches and has even more joy! There were 2 cachers named hockeychicks And for the FTF's they were real quick! Now they've reached six thousand And gave a big shout and Are still doing hockey hat tricks! There was a young cacher named Buffalo Who never was thought of as slow She's hid only seven And thinks she's in heaven, And never spends time playing bunko! There was a young cacher named fuzzybelly Whose companion was doggie not dolly Tho he did not like bears They scared him to tears His caching is still very lively. There was a young cacher named Bev Rumor has it she doubles as 'Rev' For caches she finds She makes a good rhyme Always a hand she's ready to give! There was a bearded cacher named 'griz' Who sometimes cached with his Mizz And daughter named 'bug' Who was really no thug And for FTFs they were a whiz! Great work, All!!!
