Geocache Description:

ENGLISH:

Myken is a small fishing village way off the Norwegian mainland. 14 people actually inhabit this small island today (2018). That is a 100% increase in five years. Fishing is no longer an income out here, though. Today income comes from a newly started Whisky distillery, tourism and art. Myken has three acommodation options, two cafes (+ serving at the local shop), a shop and museum/gallery options.

At Myken you can also visit the lighthouse, but you need to be shuttled across the sound between the main island and the lighthouse island. From Myken you can see the Svartisen glacier on the mainland, if weather permits - the mainland is 32 kilometres away in a straight line. At the most 150 people lived here and the earliest settlements are hundreds of years back in time, all because of access to fish and a need for fish intake facilities. At best, fisheries would make some Myken inhabitants moderately wealthy. By 1990, though, all of "old" Myken was closed down.

You can walk all of the main island ("nordløkta" to "sørløkta") in about 35 minutes.

The cache is placed near, but not too near, a memorial to an accident that killed 7 Myken men in one. That was the beginning of the end for Myken as a fishing village, according to some.
