This mural was a joint effort between the Community Engagement Dept of the Saanich Police and the Victoria Native Friendship Centre. It was completed in summer 2017 by 6 young Indigenous artists with roots from across the country. The police primary goal was to address chronic graffiti issues in this hidden area but they wanted to combine efforts with Indigenous youth to meet many needs and goals. It's an unwritten rule that graffiti artists not paint over another artist's work. Each of the participating artists designed and painted a section of the mural. Each piece of art is unique and unrelated to the next EXCEPT that the theme of the full mural is shared: reconciliation. The project is called Seaton Mural Splash. The wolf and deer piece represents the clash between Indigenous people and the white people. The young girl being supported by the raven represents the support an eastern Indigenous youth received while growing up among west coast people. And the words Ascension School with the residential school genocide dates is painted underneath the image of the Kamloops Residential School. The artist saw it while growing up and his grandmother told him what it was. The building was a source of great distress to him. So his thoughts and art of reconciliation are very specific around residential schools. The wording underneath is not related to the mural as a whole but rather just about his piece.
This is a drive by, unless you want to walk the Goose to it.
