Built in 1848. It has 32 inch brick and Motor walls, with 12 inch beams between downstairs and prisoner cells upstairs. Athens used to be the seat for Monroe County from 1830 to 1836. Up until a few years ago, this jail was in pretty bad shape. Now the Monroe County Historical society has taken it over and cleaned it up a lot. It used to actually have an old jail cell upstaires, but for some reason it was removed. There is no electricity inside the building, so bring a flashlight and a pen! Please be quiet and do not disturb the ghosts. Please be sure to sign the visitors log inside as well, but again, PLEASE DO NOT DISTURB THE GHOSTS!!! I believe the thickness of the walls are providing a safe place for spirits to hang out. If you hear some screaming, please be still and it will pass right by.
