Geocache Description:

I like puzzles, cars and geocaching.  This hide mashes up all three.  I hope you enjoy the ride!

First, the cache is not hidden at the published location.   Second, BYOP.  Third, the cache container is about 4 engine blocks off the ground.  Fourth, this cache is placed in a semi-secure area. The optimal time to attempt this cache is Monday through Friday from sunrise to sunset. There are several ways to approach GZ. Should you see the gate closed, come back another day. Should you approach a guard station turn left or turn right to avoid it and simply go around the long way.

The core of this puzzle is to determine the firing-order of several engines. This concept should be familiar territory for the automotive enthusiast.  It may prove to be a fun discovery exercise for everyone else. What is firing order? Firing order definition: the sequence of ignition in the cylinders of an internal-combustion engine. Let's consider a simple four-cylinder in-line engine. Where the cylinders are numbered typically from left-to-right as 1, 2, 3, 4. The firing-order does not have to follow this layout convention. It may, but in most cases it will not. For our example using this four-cylinder engine the FIRING ORDER shall be noted as 1-3-2-4. Solving these puzzles will require understanding the subtle difference between cylinder layout order and when each cylinder is fired or the FIRING ORDER of the engine. Let's try an example to convey this crucial point. What is the cylinder value in the 3rd firing position or simply position? Answer 2. What is the cylinder value in the 4th position? Answer 4. This may help you. The name of the company that built the engines used in the puzzles is commonly known by two letters.  The name is the 7th and 13th letters of the alphabet respectively. Good luck! You will solve the final coordinates as such:

N 39 A C (dot) B D F
W 76 E G (dot) H J I

A - 1969 164CID - The cylinder# fired fourth
B - 1969 - 1974 - 350SBC, Corvette - 5th-position minus 8th-position
C - 1982 - 1987 - Several steps involved
231CID
- Add the cylinder values from 1st three positions; call this result-LEADSLED
- Add the cylinder values from 2nd three positions; call this result-RATROD
- Subtract RATROD from LEADSLED; call this result BLOWNROD
301CID
- BLOWNROD minus one and minus the cylinder value of the last position in this engines firing order.
This result is "C".
D - 98CID Engine Code 5 - Add 1st and 2nd position values, then subtract the 3rd position.
This result is "D"
E - 194, 230, 250 Inline 6 - 2nd position minus 1st position
F - 173CID FWD vehicle - Add 1st and 5th positions minus the last
G -194, 230, 250 Inline 6 - 4th minus 5th plus 1st
H - 194, 230, 250 Inline 6 - 5th
I - 194, 230, 250 Inline 6 - 6th doubled
J - 194, 230, 250 Inline 6 - 5th plus 1st
Checksum A + B + C + D + E + F + G + H + I + J = 28
( A + B + C + D + E ) / ( F + G + H + I + J ) = 0.55555555556
