While on a recent scramble up Mt Kidd south summit via Guinn's pass, I passed a spot that I thought deserved a cache. This would also expand our hides along this popular trail. The Galatea trail was badly affected by the June 2013 floods and the evidence of this is very clear at various points along the trail.
This cache is a small camoed matchstick container located on a large boulder at the side of the main trail, part way up the trail to Lillian lake along the Galatea trail. The trail is not recommended in winter due to the avalanche hazards and there is a spring seasonal closure 1 May - late June to allow the trail to dry out. The evidence of the June 2013 flood is obvious as is the raw power of nature. The new bridges and work in the area was only completed in 2016 and it took a lot of hard work to restore easier access to this beautiful area. Both Lillian lake and the Galatea Lakes are well worth the visit for camping, hiking and for fishing. It's a popular trail, especially in the fall, but deservedly so. On Sept 10th 2016, the parking lot was full by about 10am! Be prepared for a trail that is rough in spots, has some steep ups and downs, and in some places there is some exposure. Please travel prepared for mountain weather as the weather can change quickly in the mountains. On our Sept 2016 camping trip, we awoke to several inches of fresh snow.
The cache is a few meters off the main trail in a spot asking for a cache. The cache is a camoed tube hidden on the boulder. Please bring your own writing implement and maybe tweezers to extract the log from the cache container and replace carefully in the same spot and manner to maintain the caching challenge.
