The St. Martin of Tours Cathedral (Ukrainian: Кафедральний собор св. Мартина з Туру ) also called Mukacheve Cathedral is the name given to a religious building affiliated with the Catholic Church which is located in the city of Mukacheve in the west part of European country of Ukraine.
The church is decorated with a light brown tone. Its main and highest tower is adorned with a clock, and the entrance gate was decorated with a vaulted arch and columns. It has an adjoining chapel dedicated to St. Joseph is located near the temple dates back to the fourteenth century. The church was built between 1904 and 1905 in an eclectic style. In Soviet times, it was closed by the authorities of the local communist party. In 1990 it was returned to the Catholic faithful. Since 2002, it is the cathedral of the new diocese of Mukachevo (Dioecesis Munkacsiensis Latinorum; Єпархія Мукачево) that was created by bull Cum Transcarpatiaeof Pope John Paul II
In the XIII century a Gothic church was built in Mukachevo. In 1551 the temple was moved to the Calvinists, and returned to Catholics in 1660 Sofia Batory. However, in 1682, after the decision of Imre Teceli, the shrine was given to the Catholics and Reformers, and only in 1705 the temple was finally Catholic. The church destroyed the fires during the hostilities in 1567, 1657 and 1686, and in 1725 the shrine was mostly repaired. In 1880, the nave of the temple began to collapse, so it had to be disassembled. Only the sanctuary left the church.
In the years 1904-1905, on the initiative of Count Schenborn, a new Gothic church was constructed on the project of the Hungarian architect Zigler, with the preservation of the part of the old shrine (sanctuary), which became a chapel. On September 24, 1905, the newly built temple was consecrated. In 1976 the shrine was restored. August 14, 1993 Mukachevo Temple became the main newly created Apostolic Administration of Transcarpathia, and on March 27, 2002 (with the formation of the diocese), this cathedral became a cathedral. On September 28, 2013, after the completion of almost a decade of repairs, the bishop Antal Maynek was consecrated with the participation of Bishop of the Greek Catholic Church of Transcarpathia, Bishop Mila Shashik.
The parish is served by the diocesan priests, the Franciscans (the Order of the Brother Men) and the Dominicans (Order of the Brothers of the Preachers), the nuns of the congregation of the Sisters of the Dominican Republic work at. Imelda
