The United States Declaration of Independence is the statement adopted by the Second Continental Congress meeting at the Pennsylvania State House (now known as Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 4, 1776. The Declaration announced that the Thirteen Colonies then at war with the Kingdom of Great Britain would regard themselves as thirteen independent sovereign states no longer under British rule. With the Declaration, these new states took a collective first step toward forming the United States of America. On June 11, 1776,
Congress appointed a "Committee of Five", consisting of John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, Robert R. Livingston of New York, and Roger Sherman of Connecticut, to draft a declaration to King George III and Parliament. The chore fell to Thomas Jefferson to compose the initial draft. After much deliberation and some modifications, the document was approved by Congress.
The first line of this document is:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain
unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
This has been called "one of the best-known sentences in the English language", containing "the most potent and consequential words in American history". The passage came to represent a moral standard to which the United States should strive
Personally, my favorite line of the Declaration of Independence is the last line:
"And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to
each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor."
The signatories of this document realized the consequences when they affixed their name to this document. These brave men were risked not only their fortunes, but their lives if the revolution failed. We can't thank these brave men enough.
