Geocache Description:

The Floating Island Of Lake Wabukayne

The Floating Island:

A floating island is made up of a mass of plants as well as other organic material, such as mud. These islands can vary in size. There are two types of floating islands. One is naturally occurring islands and the other one is artificially occurring islands.

Natural floating islands are usually made up of only plants. Their roots keep them afloat creating an island that gets carried around a lake or pond by the wind. Artificial floating islands are usually made up of plants planted into soil on top of a floating object such as foam mats which are anchored in some way to the bottom or shore.

Both man-made and natural floating islands can help prevent erosion caused by wind and waves. They do this by breaking up the waves and blocking or slowing down some of the wind so the the shore gets hit with less force, slowing down the process of erosion.
