Geocache Description:

Welcome to Celtic Shores Coastal Trail! We have been waiting for you! The 92-km Celtic Shores Coastal Trail stretches from Port Hastings to Inverness on the west coast of beautiful Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Explore the best of Canada’s seacoast as you journey along the trail where awe-inspiring natural beauty is matched by the vibrant celtic culture of our region. This exceptional trail system meanders along the coast providing first-class trail experiences for bikers, hikers, runners, quadders, skiers, snowmobilers and horse-back riders.

To most people this is the beginning of the Celtic Shores Coastal Trails, People from Inverness would argue their end is the beginning.  Either way this is the south end of the trail.  The Canso Causeway was official opened Sept. 16 1952, but because of the Canso Canal, Cape Breton maintained its official Island status.

From this location you can begin the trek North along the trail, however, the section called Ghost Beach is in rough condition. Its exposure to the ocean and the low elevation have alolowed the storm surges to batter the trail.  The first 1.5 km are pretty ggod, but from there to about the 4 km marker is mostly loose beach rock and sand, not ideal for anything other then ATV of hiking (with good footwear).  Troy Station is there preferred start location until work to fix this section can be performed.
