Kanc Night Cache Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

cas25: It was reported that some of the tacks have disappeared and that made the cache difficult to find. We removed the container this evening.

Geocache Description:

With all the new caches appearing on the Kanc, it seemed time to place one that is slightly different – a night cache.  The path to the cache is marked with small, white reflectors.  Use a flashlight or headlamp to spot them.

The given coordinates are for the trailhead for the East Pond Trail’s parking lot. This parking lot is on the south side of the Kanc, 3.7 miles east of the big Lincoln Woods parking area and 9.3 miles east of the stoplight at the Exit 32 ramp off I-93. There is a National Forest trailhead sign 0.15 mile before the parking area. The entrance to the parking area will be on the right at the end of a long guardrail. Coming from the other direction, the parking lot is 1.7 miles west of the hairpin turn by the Hancock Overlook. Drive slowly and with caution on the Kanc at night, as this is moose territory; use high beams when possible.

Before you start, look for a yellow birch that's up against a boulder as you face the Kanc highway. There's a reflector placed on the right hand side of the tree, near the back. That's what you'll be looking for as you walk.

You will climb a short, steep pitch at the start, then the rest of the walk is at a gentle grade on an old logging railroad bed. The reflectors will be 50 – 100 feet apart, and all but one are on the left-side of the trail.

One marker is on the right side, and that is the indicator that you are in the area of the cache.  Look to the left then for a reflector that is slightly off the trail.  You should see a geo-obvious location close-by.  The cache is hidden there and is camo’d by  a white rock.   PLEASE put the white rock back after you sign the log and hide the container again so that others can also find the cache.

The container is small/medium, but the log is a micro.  You will need tweezers and a pen or pencil to sign the log.

The cache is less than 2/10 mile from the trailhead.  If you get to a point where the trail narrows and turns off to the left, you’ve gone too far.

Congrats to barefootgal, Gloves47 and Trail Mongers for being FTF!
