Colorfully-painted dolls nested one inside the other are recognized everywhere in the world as Russian Matryoshka.
The name Matryoshka is believed to take its roots from old Russian female names Matriosha or Matriona, which was widely used among Russian peasants. The name itself connotes the matriarch of a big Russian family, coming from the word mother (mama).
For the old Slavs, Matryoshka was a symbol of motherhood and fertility of nature, that’s why it has a form of a lady with curvy shape, expressing the ancient symbol of human culture. However, in ancient Russian tradition the dolls were made without painted faces and did not represent a person because the ancients believed that the evil spirit could settle inside it. Traditionally, a matryoshka doll was given to newborns to wish them a long and prosperous life.
