Geocache Description:

This series is so named because you will be walking part of St Swithuns Way. Saint Swithuns Sway 2 is a walk of approximately 5 miles and contains 20 caches plus two individual caches. GC2DJBH “Long Common” and GC1H3J0 “Four Four Marks Moondance. Please replace all caches as found. It can be walked on its own or for a longer walk linked in with St Swithuns Sway1 to make a figure of eight walk.
The caches are mainly various sizes of camouflaged clip lock boxes and contain a film canister with log and room for swaps and trackables. There are a few micros as well.
The walk takes you along footpaths and bridleways through open farmland and wooded areas with wonderful views. Some of the footpaths are narrow and overgrown. There is only one stile to cross and the rest are kissing gates. Please keep all dogs under control when passing through fields containing livestock.

There are 2 parking areas. The first and room for 2 cars is on the side of a lane and near the start of the series. N51 05.644 W01 02. 995.The second parking is at Swelling Hill Pond N51 05.503 W01 03.329 where there is room for many cars. At the pond are a few picnic tables and is a good place to enjoy a break after or before the walk. From here it is roughly a 600 metre walk to the first cache.

St Swithuns Way runs between Winchester and Farnham partly through the Itchen Valley but some of the original route is now the A31. St Swithun’s Way follows some of the county’s best countryside paths. Starting at Winchester Cathedral, the route passes through the Itchen Valley. It then continues northeast passing the towns of Alresford and Alton, as well as Chawton, the home of Jane Austen. Following the path of the River Wey, the route reaches Farnham in Surrey and continues to Canterbury. St Swithun was born in Winchester, the capital of Wessex, in about 800. After ordination, Swithun served in the royal household and became an important advisor to the king. He became the seventeenth Bishop of Winchester, in 852, and was famous for rebuilding Winchester’s East Gate bridge. Swithun died in 862 and was buried in a simple grave outside the west door of the Saxon cathedral. Popularity made sure that Swithun became a saint, although there was no decree from Rome. The 15 July has become St Swithun’s Day and pilgrims began to pay homage to the saint in increasing numbers even after his remains, were transferred from the Saxon to the Norman cathedral in 1093.

This is the fourth series by Folkies and we hope that you enjoy it.

You are lookinf for a camo 35mm film canister

PLEASE NOTE !!! After the last cache 20 you will come to Lyway Road. Turn right to walk to parking area 1. But if you have parked at the pond please do not take the immediate footpath on the left which is the direct route back to the pond. This footpath is a right of way but in fact goes across the front drive and lawn of a residence. I think a large number of cachers walking across here would not only upset the residents but damage the reputation of Geocaching in general. It is only a short walk if you continue up Lyway Road then turn left to get to the pond. Thank you in advance Folkies.
