Geocache Description:

The Mill Connection

A short geotrail set up by Katie when staying with her Nanny. This short road will one day be sealed linking Mosston road to Castlecliff Manuka Street.

Access road from Manuka Street or Mosston Road There is a short section of gravel. Park at side of the road. quiet during the weekend but more traffic during the week so watch kids and dogs.

Once there was a Timber Mill down this road. If you drive to the end of the road you will find a newly developed area. The original Mill was brought into Wanganui from Oregon USA by John Crane. It was a family Mill. The mill was shipped out lock stock and barrel and reassembled in Wanganui. It started making specialized timber for USA housing market and shipping them back to the USA. Milling had become unprofitable at its original site in USA as there was a big move to protect the sooty owl which nested in the forests where their timber was harvested so encouraged by the city council the business was moved to Wanganui employing about 53 workers plus many casual workers. Downturn in the USA housing market and timber industry after the war in Iraq hit the Wanganui timber mill. US users of the mill's products shut up shop and eventually the mill closed and the mill was removed.

Round like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel
Like a snowball down a mountain, or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel that's turning running rings around the moon
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face
And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind.

                                                       Dusty Springfield.
