Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden near the ACC Stanley Mitchell hut, Little Yoho Valley, Yoho National Park, British Columbia

The Stanley Mitchell hut is an Alpine Club of Canada hut, completed in 1940. It is named after Stanley Mitchell who helped found the ACC in 1906 and served as secretary-treasurer from 1907-30. The hut is a comfortable facility located at 2060m in the Little Yoho Valley in Yoho National Park tucked at the edge of a scenic meadow in beautiful mountain terrain. The hut was designated a Federal Heritage Building in 1997.

The hut and nearby Parks campsite make an ideal base for hiking, scrambling, ski-touring and climbing the nearby mountains neighbouring peaks such as the President, Vice-President, & Mt McArthur and other smaller summits. The ascent of the President and Vice President is a good introductory expedition and can be combined in a single day but the normal route requires glacier travel (crevasses are present) and crossing the bergshrund can be the crux of the day. Appropriate training, experience and equipment are required.

Access : In summer the hut is an 11km, 520m of ascent, 3-4 hour hike from Takakkaw Falls. In winter, the road from the trans Canada highway to the falls is closed (gated) and the hut is about 23km, 675m of ascent from the locked gate which under good conditions takes 7-8 hrs, but can take much longer after fresh snow and when trail breaking. The hut is located at the W end of the Bow-Yoho traverse, a ski traverse that typically crosses the Wapta from Num-ti-jah lodge on Bow lake, via Bow hut, then the new Guy hut and on to Stanley Mitchell via Isolated col. We would recommend the hike to the hut from Takakkaw Falls via the valley trail and then when leaving head out via the incredibly scenic Iceline trail. Kewetinok Pass or Twin Falls via Marpole lake and back over the Whaleback are good hikes to enjoy while in the area.

Please replace as found where it is out of sight of muggles.

Note: A valid park pass is required for any exploration of Yoho National Park.
