Geocache Description:

[RO]

[EN]

In the center of the city operated the civilian casino, also called the city ballroom. It was first built in 1839 and then rearranged on several occasions. The local authorities administered it. The customers of the ballroom were well-off locals, mostly Hungarians, but ethnicity was not a condition for membership. In fact, access to the casino depended on paying a membership fee. The ballroom had not only rooms with billiard or games tables, but also a collection of 1600 books. For a long time the casino was the only public library of the city. For non-members, the ballroom had a restaurant saloon and an open-air summer garden opened towards the city park, which surrounded it. Musical shows and theater plays were often held at the civilian casino. It might not be superfluous to add that, before the First World War, the shows of Romanian theater companies were held in its rooms.       In 1921, during the preparations for the crowning of King Ferdinand in Alba Iulia, which was scheduled for 1922, the civilian casino was rearranged by the addition of a show room with 400 seats. From then on, this room was known as “Caragiale Room,” but this is the subject of a different story.
