Geocache Description:

The Beech Forest Railway Station was constructed in 1902, and saw many additions throughout its lifetime.

At the far end of the station a ‘Balloon’ Loop was built in 1903.  This was so both the train and carriages could be turned to evenly wear the wheels.

Passengers would get off the train before it went around the loop, not sure why, it was the Victorian Railways policy, maybe they thought someone might get hit by a wayward tennis ball...yes that is a tennis court in the middle of the loop.   It was the only balloon loop built and used in Victoria on the narrow gauge lines.

There is one tale about an inebriated local from a nearby wine saloon who one very dark night stepped out of the saloon and onto the railway track to walk home.  But instead of heading towards home, he went the wrong way.  He walked into Beech Forest, around the loop and back to the saloon before he realised his mistake.  On sobering up the next morning he thanked his lucky stars he hadn't taken the line to Colac, otherwise he would be still walking!!
