Crumpsall lies 2.5 miles north of Manchester city centre on the River Irk (near which you will find one of my other caches). Incidentally, the name Crumpsall derives from Old English, and means a "crooked piece of land beside a river". It was originally a very rural area, although this changed significantly during the Industrial Revolution and eventually, the town was adopted into the city of Manchester in 1890.
Crumpsall remains industrial today, with big scientific names working out of Hexagon Tower at the bottom of Delaunays Road. It is also known in the region for North Manchester General Hospital, found over the road from the church. NMGH was formerly known as Crumpsall Hospital, and on the site lies Park House, which has a long and storied history and has gone by various names including Springfield Hospital and the Manchester Workhouse.
In the grounds of St Matthew with St Mary’s, you will find a memorial commemorating parish members killed or missing during the First and Second World Wars.
