Famous Quad Citizens - John Deere Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

cneumann98: The first DNF made sense because it was absolutely on the ground and winter could’ve hidden it. After a second DNF, I figured stopping by was warranted since we’d be in the neighborhood. I could tell GZ has been compromised as soon as I saw it. This cache had a good long run and I was very thankful for the logs and favorite points. I’m not going to throw another ammo can here if the area is compromised, so I’ll open this spot up for a future hide.

Geocache Description:

John Deere (1804-1886) was an American blacksmith and manufacturer. He founded Deere & Company, one of the largest agricultural and construction equipement manufacturers in the world. Born in Vermont, he moved to Grand Detour, IL, and quickly found work as a blacksmith. Realizing that cast-iron plows did not work well on the prairie soil, he set about designing a plow made of highly polished steel that would work better in the Midwest conditions. His first cast steel plow was built in 1837 and by 1841, he was producing between 75 and 100 plows a year for local farmers. In 1848, Deere moved to Moline because the city was a river transport hub. By 1855, Deere's factory sold more than 10,000 plows.

Starting coordinates will bring you to John Deere's grave in Moline's Riverside Cemetery. Please be respectful of anyone else visiting the cemetery and only visit during posted hours. Using what you see here, answer the following questions in order to choose the final coordinates:

There is a large monument in the center of the Deere family plot with the family's name at the base. It is a different color than nearly all the headstones around it. How many of the family headstones within the square are the same color?

  • If no stones match, go to N 41° 30.640
  • If one stone matches, go to N 41° 30.523
  • If two stones match, go to N 41° 30.537
  • If three stones match, go to N 41° 30.541

One stone has a weathered (green) metal plaque on it, behind the family monument. What is the man's first name?
  • If it is Francis, go to W 90° 29.344
  • If it is Charles, go to W 90° 29.433
  • If it is Hiram, go to W 90° 29.742
  • If it is Benjamin, go to W 90° 29.559
