Geocache Description:

Louie Bellson (1924-2009) was an American jazz drummer. Born in Rock Falls, IL, as Luigi Paulino Alfredo Francesco Antonio Balassoni, he grew up in Moline and began playing drums at the age of three. He beat 40,000 other drummers to win the National Gene Krupa Contest at 17 years old. Duke Ellington described him as "not only the world's greatest drummer... (but also) the world's greatest musician." He performed on over 200 albums and recorded with Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, and dozens of others.
