Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the Van Vliet boat landing, Presque Isle, WI

I have changed the person’s name on this, in order to save his family any embarrassment. So, let’s call him Dave Wheeler.

Mr. Wheeler was the town cop back in the fifties. As such he was charged with the responsibility to enforce (and obey) the laws. Unfortunately, Ofc. Wheeler also had a penchant for hunting whitetail deer and, even if the deer season wasn’t open, it didn’t matter to him.

One of the townsmen had observed Ofc. Wheeler killing a deer out of season, and alerted the local game wardens. The wardens went to Ofc. Wheeler’s home to investigate. They told him about the accusation of his illegal hunting and he, at first, denied having any venison in his possession.

His son, who was in the room at the time, thought his father had forgotten something important, so he piped up and said “But Dad, what about all the meat in the freezer in the basement?”

His somewhat flustered dad tried to cover his tracks and told the wardens that, while he did have  a little venison in his freezer, he had put it there months ago, during deer season.

Once again, Ofc. Wheeler’s son, trying to be helpful, said “No Dad. Remember? You just put some more down there last night!”

Busted!!!! The warden’s found the remains of almost six deer in Ofc. Wheeler’s freezer. The fines, and loss of his hunting privileges, were significant.

We never did hear what happened to Ofc. Wheeler’s helpful son, as a result of his comments to the wardens, but we suspect he ate his next few meals standing up…..
