Geocache Description:

Old Wand Cemetery sits on a bluff overlooking the Green River -- The history of this area goes back about 3,000 years. Woodbury was the site of a Native American settlement that was big enough to have a fort-like stockade. Numerous shell mounds, petroglyphs, and stone tools have been discovered in the area.

The first white settlers came to the area around 1800. And the Green River was used for boat travel since 1805. Thomas Wand settled and built a mill here in 1806. Many generations of his family can be found in this cemetery. It is located on the grounds of the Butler County Museum.

As the community grew into a thriving river boat town burials of neighbors were included into the Wand Family Cemetery. Many of Woodbury's current residents have ancestors buried in this old cemetery.  The graveyard was active from 1805 to around 1900. There are some beautiful old markers and cultural vegetation including yucca and periwinkle. Many of the markers are just simple unmarked field stones. It's a good place to explore.

The cache isn't hidden in the cemetery but on the bluff line overlooking the Green River behind the graveyard. While walking through the graveyard toward the waypoint you will come to a hog-wire fence marking the edge of the cemetery. Follow the fence to the South until you come to a section where the fence has fallen down and makes for an easy path to the cache. I have hidden an ammo can with a few swag items along a rock outcropping.  Should be an easy find once you get to GZ.

After leaving the fence line, the ground is rather steep with lots of leaf litter, please watch your step. There are the normal hazards - ticks, poison ivy, and briers in the area. The cache could also be reached from the Green River if you are floating / boating the river with a bit of work climbing up the bluff. Please no night hunting for this one - it is only to be found during daylight hours.
