The Maryland Watermen’s Monument honors the watermen of the Chesapeake Bay. Upon a base of granite, the statue depicts two nine-foot-tall watermen made of bronze. These watermen from a past era are standing in the bow of a small skiff and each man is paddling with his respective oar in hand.
George O’Donnell, the founder, wanted to honor the Chesapeake Bay watermen. Seven years in the making, the 7,000 pound bronze statue was completed and placed in 2003.
Designed and sculpted by a local, Tilghman Hensley, the Maryland Watermen’s Monument is located on Rt 18 near the Kent Narrows Drawbridge.
While you are here, take a look at what’s lying in the bottom of the boat; a fishing net and the day’s catch of rockfish (a.k.a. striped bass).
