ENG - Systematic research of the Danilo Valley that began in the 1950s revealed a wealth of archaeological sites which show that the valley has been permanently inhabited for at least 7500 years.
ENG - At the time of Roman Empire, the town Rider or Municipium Riditarum ("Town of Riditae") was located in Danilo. The traces of the Roman town were excavated at several locations in Danilo. Remains of one of the larger buildings from the 1st - 2nd century are presented at the site Stari Šematorij, near the Church of Saint Daniel.
ENG -There are two segments of the same house presented at the site: its economic part with a number of smaller storage rooms on the southern side, and a thermal part in the north. The thermal baths were used for hygiene and relaxation, and are recognized by semi-circural pools and a room with floor-and-wall heating system - sauna. Warm air was conducted to the sauna from the furnace room and flowed between densley spaced small columns that carried the "false floor" made of large flat bricks topped by mosaic. Above the part of the thermal baths, in later periods (Late Roman or Middle Ages), a smaller church was built, whose apse used the wall of one of the former pools.
ENG - The ancient Roman past and the walls of Rider at this site were eventually covered by medieval cemetery after which the site was called Stari Šematorij ("Old Cemetery")
