Geocache Description:

The Tumble Inn ruins are located in the Angeles National Forest. No permit is needed as this is an unimproved site.

The last 4.5 miles are an unmaintained road. But, any 2-wheel drive vehicle with reasonable ground clearance should be able to make it. The road is a mix of the old 1917 cement roadbed and old asphalt placed in later years to straighten out some of the curves. The asphalt has a number of potholes, so you will want to go slow in a few places. There are a few sections where dirt now covers the roadbed.

The only way in is from Highway 138 to the north. There is a locked gate on the Castaic side just north of Templin Highway.

There are no services at the Tumble Inn. All that remains are stone walls and foundations. Nearest gas/food/water/restrooms are in Gorman more than ten miles away. Cell phone reception is spotty.

Tumble on in to the ruins of the historic Tumble Inn any time between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2018 which also happens to be YD's birthday. A raffle will be held at 12:30 p.m. and will include Ridge Route themed items in addition to geocaching related prizes.

This is a casual event meant to introduce (or reintroduce) you to this piece of California history. If you are so inclined, bring a picnic lunch, a chair, and sit for a spell to trade travel bugs, coins and geocaching stories with fellow cachers. Note that the Ridge Route has no facilities (no food, no water, no restrooms, no gas) and cell phone reception is spotty. However, what the route lacks in services, it makes up for in history and beauty.

There are plenty of caches to be found on the way in via the Old Ridge Route Road which begins at the junction of Highway 138. Some of the caches are located at historical points of interest along the route. We placed 22 additional new caches on Old Ridge Route Road that have already published for those that may have cached out this area previously. There are also 11 new caches on nearby Gorman Post Road, which also has a lot of benchmarks along it.

The old Ridge Route can be navigated in 2WD though extremely low clearance vehicles are not recommended due to occasional potholes. There are also caches on spur roads, most of which require 4WD. Those of you arriving in 2WD may want to buddy up with cachers driving 4WD for some caching on spur roads. Note that a few spur roads are closed due to washouts. We will have updated information on which are open and which are closed before the event. There is ample parking at the Tumble Inn and in several nearby turnouts.

Note that while the route was once a through route open from Castaic to Highway 138, it is now closed by locked gate at the Castaic end due to easement issues between the Angeles National Forest and some landowners. However, the route is open from Highway 138 to the Tumble Inn where there is another gate (often locked). Some choose to take mountain bikes or hike to the caches beyond the locked gate, but there are numerous other vehicle accessible caches to be had on area roads. There's plenty of time for caching beforehand or afterwards.
