Orbiting the Planet - Earth
This series of caches is an attempt at showing the scale of our solar system. The Sun, or Sol, is the centre of our known system, and all bodies within orbit it, from the planets, asteroids, comets to the hundreds of dwarf planets. The Sun is MASSIVE, with a diameter of 1.39 million kilometres!
The dome of the defunct Planet Hollywood restaurant in Niagara Falls, Canada will represent the Sun. The Planet Hollywood dome is approximately 24m. Using this scale caches have been placed at appropriate distances away to represent the distance from the Sun. The Planet Hollywood dome/Sun is at 43.093046 and -79.070791 (right near the Rainbow Bridge).
Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only astronomical object known to harbor life. According to radiometric dating and other sources of evidence, Earth formed over 4.5 billion years ago. Earth is 12742km in diameter, .9% the size of the Sun.
Earth revolves around the Sun in 365.26 days, a period known as an Earth year. During this time, Earth rotates about its axis about 366.26 times.
At the scale of the Planet Hollywood dome representing our Sun, Earth would only be 22 cm in diameter and it lies 2.58 km from our Sun. Earths satellite, the Moon, at this scale would be 10 metres away and 6cm in diameter.
All caches are small plastic containers containing log sheets only. Please bring your own writing utensil.
