Summit Camp Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

arcticSearcher: Maintainer note. The project which provided me the opportunity to travel to Summit Camp has ended for me and I am no longer able to maintain this cache. The cache itself is in great condition and very well protected, so any cacher who is willing/able to take on maintenance, please do send me a note.

Geocache Description:

This cache location represents over 30 years of science research and supporting activities at the summit of the Greenland ice sheet. Starting in 1988 with the GISP2 ice core project, the camp and skiway were established by the National Science Foundation and with support from the New York Air National Guard. Swiss and Danish arctic programs collaborated with a parallel effort called GRIP, about 28km east of the summit project.

Currently, Summit station is crewed by up to 50 people during the summer season and 4 during the winter. Home to numerous long-term studies, a handful of various experiments, and seasonal projects, Summit station hosts researchers from all around the world.

Transport to and from the camp is facilitated primarily by the New York Air National Guard with specially equipped LC-130J ski planes. The skiway is 4572m / 15000ft. Occasional Twin Otter charters from Iceland are also accommodated.

Terrain is listed as 5, since transport to/from the cache is exclusive or prohibitively expensive.

The container is transparent, with a latching lid, located indoors in managers office. Log book, pencil, and trinkets are inside. Maintenance and care by Kangerlussuaq and arcticSearcher.
