The beloved and historic Clamshell Railroad transported people, oysters, cranberries and more up and down the Long Beach Peninsula before there were paved roads! Known as the train that ran by the tide table, not by the time table, retrace the whistle stops and learn about the early days of transportation out here at the "end of the road".
While the train was still in operation, but as automobiles became more commonplace in the area, a solution was worked out to allow both modes of transportation to pass the rocky outcropping that Fort Columbia was built on. A wooden plank road of sorts was constructed to go around the outside of the hillside, but one had to be brave and trust in their "horseless carriage" to make the crossing, particularly during fierce winter storms.
